CAVALCADE SHOW Installation

Just before the closing party I snuck into Xspace to install the Geometric Janitor. I Had a load of help from Sean Lewis and in a few hours it was fully set up. We Had a lot of fun at the closing reception and the Cavalcade publication was launched (photos coming soon).

In Other news the fine folks of "The Globe and Mail", found one of my promo papers and wrote about it in the Dec 11th issue. Heres the link!

It isn't very often that an illustrator gets an opportunity to work on wall size images, but it is a lot of fun. This is a shot of my section of the massive wall mural on exhibit at Xspace gallery.

over the course of the month the 9 artists involved will be altering and adding to each others section to create one huge continuous, collaborative mural.
Sean Lewis and I have already started the collaborative process by adding a character to his section of the mural.

These are just a few details but I definitely recommend taking a closer look at all the amazing work.

The show will be on exhibit, until DEC 11 followed by an awesome closing reception and after party at the White House.

Don't hesitate, This work will be gone forever in a few weeks, never to return! Over Dramatic but oh well!

It's been a while since my last post but I haven't forgotten. This image is a promotional image for an upcoming group show at Xspace. There are 10 artists in total and our objective is to transform the walls of Xspace into a 360 degree panoramic view of some kind of continuous parade/procession. Last Week I had the pleasure of helping out a good friend, and learn all about screen printing at the Halo Halo studio.

What a sweet set up, there is so much cool stuff to look at. Jeff Garcia and friends have done a great job of setting up this awesome studio space.

This is just a personal piece that I wanted to do for a while. There is no real concept behind it but I was inspired by a band that I've been listen to a lot, lately. The group is called Tennis. They are from Denver but bought a sailboat in Florida and wrote a bunch of songs sailing around the Pacific.Before their money ran out! What a great way to focus on a project!

Earlier this summer I was approached to create some illustrations for a film festival that takes place in Huntsville, Ontario. The film festival is called Film North and this is it's debut year.

I Love Huntsville so much, its a beautiful little town to visit if your ever in the area. The direction was to create Canadiana, elements that could be collaged together to form a large poster. I am happy with the way it turned out and stoked that I had the opportunity to draw this kinda stuff.
As a promotion a few of my drawings were turned into rub on tattoos.

I love the way they turned out. Rad to see people rockin them!

He liked my design so he stuck it on a board and these are a few shots of the finished graphic on the actual board. As most people know, I'm really into bikes. I own a few and enjoy riding them as much as possible. Bicycle touring is one of my favorite types of biking because it combines aspects of camping with cycling. Touring allows you to see an area in a very intimate way. It is so different then travelling by car. You earn every km and it is super rewarding.

A couple days ago, one of my best friends and I loaded up the bikes and headed north west to Conestoga. When touring, churches and cemeteries offer a nice place to rest and often a place to fill up water bottles.
I brought along some chalk and tried to draw something every time we stopped.
I used to bring a sketch book with me on a tour but I find it much more exciting to search for cool surfaces to muck around with. Plus sketch books are a lot heavier.

We road through lots of Amish communities which may have inspired this guy.

Hap-Hazard, high park

Here is a photo of the final installation. You can find this little guy tucked away in a cozy corner of high park.

We had lots of fun making the structure and got rid of a lot of clutter at the same time. A big thanks to our friend Ty, Who helped lend a hand for this project.

Hopefully we'll have a few more shots of the ti pi in the future.

It started to rain just as we were finishing, so we didn't stick around to document it as well as we wanted.

After we painted up the wood, we made these cool bundles that looked rad, all together.

We moved all the wood of the patio and filled up the living room, instead! Sometimes things have to get a little bit worse before they can get better.

Jimmy and I have been collecting scraps of wood, and storing them for some kind of unknown project. Our tiny patio was packed so full that it was hindering our bar b q set up and causing a potential fire hazard. We decided to paint up the scraps and make some kind of installation.

After work this Wednesday I jumped on my bike and rode up to queens park for the Friends With You, Installation.
I've loved the work of these Miami based artists for a very long time, So I was very pleased to finally see there amazing work in person.
Their work is also on Display at Narwhal gallery and it is worth checking out. There are also a few more installations by FWY, peppered around Toronto which I hope to search out in the next few days. Soooo good!

Old Doodles

My Buddy Sean Lewis, Is probably one of the most talented artist I Know. His work is always a lot of fun to look at. So when asked to collab with him in a moleskin, I jumped at the chance. We past the hours of a boring liberal studies class by shoving this book around.

These are just two of many that were shared. The others are split among us on various scraps of paper.

I'm sure later in life I'll open an old text book and come across these random doodles shoved in between the pages, and chuckle.

Eye weekly Illustrations

So last week I was asked to illustrate the possible cover for this weeks(June 10) eye weekly. I was super excited at the opportunity and jumped at the chance to grace the pages of this awesome Toronto publication. The would be cover (above) Is for a band called Pavement, whom I've been a fan of since I was a wee pup. So the commission was a dream job basically and I got a lot of freedom to do what I wanted for the cover. The only down side is that there was no guarantee that it would be the cover image.

As of now I haven't actually seen the cover but I was told that my cover images was not selected:( but I am told that it did make it into the main article for the band:)
I was also asked to make a few spot illustrations to be used with the article and this is what I came up with.
The art director liked the type treatment I made for my web and blog page so worked with those forms and added elements that are reoccurring in the cover art as well as my somewhat signature adornment.

Like I said I haven't seen the paper yet but I believe the type made it to the cover sans the elements and decoration. I can't wait to see the paper and I hope that some people get to check it out.

It been a while since my last post. I wanted to take a little break after the hectic grad show stuff. Thanks to everyone that made it in to TCAF a while back. It was my first one and I was pleasantly surprised at the talent represented at the convention.

As for now I've got a few exciting projects on the go but its a little too early to release the new stuff.

Rest assured that I'm keeping busy and still making stuff!

Time flys when your having fun! school is finally coming to an end. I had to do an emergency grad installation which was super exciting and overwhelming. So Instead of sleeping last week I painted a skateboard for the disposable art show that opens Today!!, May 8. check it out if you get a chance. I recently found out that I just got 2 pieces selected, to be published in American Illustration #29. Last year I had one of my thesis pieces published and went to the big NY party, Last November. The book is amazing and I urge anyone to take a look at the awesome work that this publication releases annually.

SKINNY DIP,Typeface dessign

Over The Last couple weeks I designed This Typeface. Its called Skinny Dip and is a style of lettering that I have been wanting to do for Quite some time. I designed 3 weights and the one above is the skinny version of the face.
This is the Regular weight face that I designed and based the skinny, and the bold on.
Here is The Bold version with filled counters and parallel lines. Some Characters are more successful than others and it still needs some work but I am pleased with the results and hope to use this face in some future designs.

This is the piece That I painted for the One 2 Many collaborative piece. Jimmy and I did a sweet resin pour , which I thought turned out really well. This is the first time I played with this clear resin stuff and I am pleased with the results although the fumes were a little stinky!

Here are a few picks of the window installation that I did for Creative Type II. I assembled it all at OCAD, late one light. Tied crazy knots and cut all kinds of crazy string.

Although the work was tedious, It was nice to do work in the presence of such a beautiful mural, painted by my pal Daniel Downey.

Well the Creative Type show, last thursday was a big hit and tons of fun. The event got written up in the National Post. The spread looked great and was nice to see some of the work in print. The image above was my contribution to the show, but you should really check out 52 mcCaul to take in all the amazing work while you can. The show runs until march 28. I was also lucky enough to be asked to do a window instillation for the show, which I will take some shots of and post. The show also made it on to Blog T.o., where your truly as well as a few others got a shout out. They spelt my name wrong but then again who doesn't!

Laser Cut! what! what!

It's not very often that I get to dabble with high tech stuff. So I was petty stoked when I got to harness the powers of a cutting laser to assist me in creating a window installation for the creative type show @ 52 Mcaul this Thursday, march 18. I was a proud papa, walkin through the halls at school with these babies. The smell of burning, Baltic birch filled the OCAD 6th floor, open studio. This is gonna be fun!

Field NOTES, Work!

The Field Notes group show has come to an end, So I thought it would be a good idea to show some of my work from it. All this work is still up for grabs so if your keen on something, drop me an email.

This ones titled, "In Lou of a Bow". Graphite on toned Canson paper. (approx 9"x18")
This one is one of my personal faves! titled, "Twenty Ten, Touring, Tall bike, Tiger". Graphite on toned Canson. (approx 22"x28")
The details are hard to see but it's a charmer! Titled "First Touch". Made of gouache, ink and a bit of graphite all on vintage calligraphy paper. (approx 10"x15")
This Last piece was the first that I made for the show and I think it is still one of my faves. The title is "Contact", made of gouache, ink, and graphite all on water color paper. (approx 22"X28")

All of these pieces are framed and ready to roll! Hope you enjoy this new stuff and thanks to everyone who made it out. It was an amazing night.

I finally got around to make an animated time lapse of the mural I painted last year! It was a an amazing opportunity and I had a lot of fun working really big for a change. A huge thanks to Gary Taxali and the illustration faculty for letting me paint on the walls.

FIELD NOTES, a group show

We finished up the field notes show yesterday.Took down the work and got all our stuff sorted out. Seeing as the show is done I thought I would post some shots of us putting it all together.
Kellen and Jim tackled the big job of hanging the 3-D letters. Big job!, while I took care of the vinyl. Big thanks to Jamie, for hooking up another great vinyl cut.
Jimmy's getting excited about the set up. We were all pretty pooped but at this stage you get your second wind.

And the corner where the east and north wall meet.
Here is a shot of the window instillation. This was a lot of fun to do especially in such a good looking window.
We used stuff that we collected over the years, then turned the display into a battlefield for our plastic soldiers. good times!

.....have been hectic! back to school, back to work, tearing down the lowbrow show, and making new work for the upcoming, Field Notes group show. For this show I wanted to do more pencil pieces so I've been going through HBs like crazy..
Jimmy and I built these 3-D letters for the window installation at the Industtrees Gallery.
They are lots of fun...
The Lowbrow show got taken down a day early due to some emergency construction, So this is the only image I have of the final installation.
Thanks to everyone that made it out! There was a great turnout for the opening and it was good to see so many familiar faces,especially around the beginning of a new year! I hope you can all make it out again to the field notes show this Friday... its gonna be a good one!

FIELD NOTES, a group show

Super excited about this one! The venue is a really nice, small store front called industtrees on college st. I am currently hustling to get some new work done for this show, hence the lack of posts in the last little while. The show opens January 15 and it should be a lot of fun.

Making an installation!

As you may or may not know, I have been asked to participate in the Toronto Lowbrow show that is happening January 7th @ 52 mcCaul. I Love any opportunity to make 3-D installations so I harvested a massive supply of cardboard and lugged it across the city to my studio/living room to make something specifically for this show.
Cardboard is an amazing material and best of all it's free! I based this installation on imagery from a piece that I made specifically for this show. After a rough drawing and proportion of what I wanted to do, I cut the cardboard into panels. using masking tape, I attached the panels together. At this point you can start to see your drawing come alive, which is motivating cause there is still a lot to do.
Cardboard absorbs paint like crazy so I like to prime it. That way I don't waste my pigment paint. Thanks Jak, for your priming skills!
I also made some spooky clouds to go along with the rest of the installation. They were painted black after they were primed!

After everything got primed I painted the shapes with acrylic paint and at this point they are pretty much ready to go. Here are some nice and tall booted legs for the lowbrow show. If you are curious to see how these legs make their way into the show you'll have to wait until January 7th to see them in person! or just stay tuned until I post some pics in the near future!

I was going through the old hard drive, and found some work that I did For the student gallery show back in Sept. I cleaned up the scans and thought I would post a few before I added them to my web site. Canadiana and fake Canadian folklore were the themes behind these pieces. At the moment things are hectic at school but I have a few projects on the go that I'll post in the near future. enjoy!

I spent the last couple days working on this little zine. it was for class but I kept working on it after it was evaluated just trying to make it a bit better. I had a lot of fun making this thing but I am most happy about the way the cover turned out. I'm thinking that I might try to produce more copies of this zine but there are still few kinks that I need to work out. I'll post the actual content of the comic in the upcoming week, so check back for that.

Here is a sneak peak of a work in progress for some good friends of mine and their soon to be born baby. I've been working on this piece for a while and I'm finally starting to see it come around. I can't believe that so many shades of green exist, its crazy. anyways I was super excited to try and work big instead of stuff the needs to be scanned. I hope this piece can be enjoyed in the years to come as this baby grows into a person. Congrats' Erin I know it's comin any day now!

Spectacle Window Display

I played hooky from school last friday to install the spectacle window display. This has been a long time coming and I'm stoked that it is finally up. installation art is a facet of design that has become a growing passion of mine. I would love the opportunity to do more of this kind of work in the future, fingers crossed! A big thanks to my lovely lady for all the support and a great help. It's back to school for a lot of people this week, including myself, so what better than reconnecting after the summer at a cool art show. I've been trapped indoors for the later part of August working on new pieces that were inspired by the great Canadian outdoors and the need to fabricate Canadian folklore. The opening reception is September 10th 5-7. There is tons of amazing work from some of my favorite Toronto artists. It should be a blast!

I haven't posted in a while but i just wanted to let people know that I haven't slowed down. I've been away on a few trips and trying to work at my jobby job as much as possible. I ve also been looking for a new place to live which has become a huge annoyance in my life. All things aside I've still tried to focus on making some stuff for tons of amazing shows coming up in the fall. The big show that the work shown in the picture is for is going to be in early september at the OCAD student gallery. Im super pumped about it, it's gonna be rad!

I just Finished this graphic for a friend that rides for Sattelyte wakeskates. I hope he likes it, was a lot of fun to do. Im a big fan of native stuff so i jumped at the chance to play with the imagery.

I just got back form New york where our primary objective was to promote ourselves in a creative way to a few specific design agencies. I wasn't able to post any of the preliminary work for my promotion so I figured its better late than never.

Mike Perry was super sweet to us. He was stoked on our promotion so we traded with some of his amazing work! Definitely a high light of the promo tour!
The Boys and I, had an amazing time in the big apple. We got to meet some amazing people and see some amazing sights! It was a good time all around! A big thanks to Tom Slaughter for showing us around, and also a big thanks to the Mezei crew for providing transport and shelter, sorry bout the mirror!

I had to finish screen printing the cover in one night so that I could drop them off at the printers to be chopped and stapled.
This is the last page of the book with a simple drawing and the address of my web page.
This is the second last page which has my c.v. and a business card placed into the page.

Each book was numbered on the back. The edition was out of 30.

I designed and printed a calender book for my promotion but I wanted to screen the covers, which turned out to be a bigger endeavor than I originally thought.
Although it was a bit more work than I bargained for I was pleased with the way the covers turned out.

Yesterday, kellen, Jim and I, hit up the Halo Halo studio @ 401 Richmond to print the poster for our up coming show. the poster will be put up in a few places in the city but the majority of them will be available for sale at the show. Keepsix gallery is the space we are showing at and it is located at 938 Bathurst just north of bloor. The opening reception will be happening on May 15 and run for two weeks. The entire show is built around the theme of transportation and has all new never been seen work by the three of us. All are welcome to join us for some refreshments on the 15th if you dare!

A big huge thanks to Jeff Garcia and Jan Avendano for helping us out! you guys are my favorite!

illustration, boo ya!

I recently became aware that one of my illustrations for thesis had been selected for the upcoming illustration annual known as American Illustration. Over 8,000 images were submitted but only 360 images make it in to the published book. I couldn't believe my luck and I am certainly stoked to get in. On that same note I have also been notified that two other pieces of work have been selected by the quarterly illustration publication, known as 3X3. Both publications will be released this upcoming fall. Im so pumped and want to thank all my family, friends, and faculty for their support.

I thought I would take this time to display my work space at home. I have always found it fascinating to see where people work and live. I love looking through 3x3 magazine to see photos of popular illustrators, studio spaces. This photo is a bit dated cause I have some newer furniture to house the crap-load of supplies at my place. I've been cleaning out my hard drive and checking out some old work. I had a hard time getting my name on this work for some reason and I found a screen shot I took after they included my name thanks to the Swav. He was the one responsible for making me grow a spine and hooking it all up. the other images are the roughs I submitted before I painted up the actual console.

So a long while back i stumbled upon some cut up 1"X1" segments in my favorite dumpster. I thought they looked cool so i painted them up in various colors not really knowing what else to do with them. I was also fortunate enough to have a bit of help form "smelly kelly", and jak with some of the peg designs. After these things cluttered up my humble home "studio" i decided to share them with the world, or at least queen west. let me know if you find them?

This piece was for my 3rd year core illustration class. the idea was to design a snowboard graphic about the 4 elements Earth, wind, water, and fire. I wanted to draw long rat creatures so this is what I came up with for the earth element.
